Why I Use Brave Instead of Chrome

I’ve been using Brave as my default browser for over four years, and it’s changed how I browse the web—no more ads following me around, less memory hogging, and a speed boost that makes me question why I ever stuck with Chrome. Here’s why I made the switch and never looked back.

Why Brave Is My Go-To Browser

  • It’s built on Chromium, so it feels just like Chrome. All your bookmarks, extensions, and settings import in minutes—super easy!
  • Speed: Brave loads pages up to 3x faster than Chrome and uses 33-66% less RAM.
  • Battery Life: It uses about 35% less battery, so no more frantic searches for a charger.
  • Privacy: Brave has a built-in ad blocker and shields to keep trackers away—no plugins needed.

Simply put, Brave is designed for performance and privacy without sacrificing user experience.1

Brave Tweaks — Make It Even Better

While Brave is great out of the box, a few tweaks can take your experience to the next level.

Change the DNS Server

A DNS server is like an internet phone book, translating domain names into IP addresses. Default DNS servers can be slow and insecure, so switching to a faster, more secure option like Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 can boost your browsing speed and privacy.2

  1. Load brave://settings/security in the address bar or navigate through Menu > Settings > Privacy and security > Security.
  2. Enable “Use secure DNS” and select Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) from the options.

Boost Privacy Settings

  • Aggressive Ad & Tracker Blocking: Block almost everything that tries to track you.

Load brave://settings/security in the address bar or navigate through Menu > Settings > Privacy and security > Security. Enable “Use secure DNS” and select Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) from the options.

  • Enable “Do Not Track”: Toggle on this setting to politely ask websites not to track you—though not all will listen.

Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and other site data > Enable “Send a ‘Do Not Track’ request with your browsing traffic”

  • Ensure Secure Connections Only: Enforce HTTPS connections wherever possible.

Settings > Privacy & Security > Security > Turn on “Always use secure connections”

Tinker with Brave Flags for Extra Power

“Flags” are like secret switches in Brave that let you test new features or improve performance. Though they’re labeled as “experimental,” they’re safe to use and can improve your browsing experience.

I always recommend these two flags to everyone-

  • Parallel Downloading: By enabling this, you can boost your download speed, making it almost as quick as using a dedicated download manager.
  • Experimental QUIC protocol: QUIC is a new protocol designed by Google to make the web faster and more efficient, even on slower connections.

To enable the flags, type chrome://flags in your Brave address bar, and search for the flags.

Wrapping Up

Brave is everything you loved about Chrome, minus the baggage. Faster, more private, and just plain better. Once you try it, you might wonder why you ever put up with Chrome’s ads, tracking, and heavy resource consumption. I know I did. Happy browsing!
